Wortley Wellness Centre

Over the last couple of months, as I drive down Wortley Road, I have seen a sign out front of one building announcing that Wortley Wellness Centre is coming soon. Well, the waiting time is over and the Centre is now open for business.

Wortley Wellness Centre is the dream-become-reality of Ursula Prelog who has nurtured the idea throughout its' long gestation period. As a massage therapist, Ursula tells me that she is a strong believer in referrals and often sends her clients to other therapists for additional care. She thought, why not have all these professionals under one roof where together they could make the best possible health care plan for their clients? With that in mind, Ursula was excited when she noticed the building at 119 Wortley for sale. She thought, “Why not?” and when she saw inside the building it was a firm “Yes!” That was back in 2005. Then began the rezoning process which as Ursula says, is not an easy, cheap or quick process. It is evident that she is relieved that most of that stress is behind her now.

Creating this beautiful space has obviously been a labour of love for Ursula who has designed everything, from the front desk to the backroom closet. When asked if the creative process had been fun, Ursula replies, “Oh yes!! but it was a lot of work.” Hours of research went into everything and her attention to every detail is obvious in the outcome which is both elegant and serene. First, she wanted to find the sinks (each treatment room has its' own sink) but she wanted them to look more like furniture. After combing through hundreds of websites, she made her choices and then came the task of assembling the theme for each room. A warm and soft colour pallet runs throughout the building but vibrant colour is splashed here and there to enliven the effect. The overall effect is stunning; it creates a sense of serenity even as you step through the front door.

The centre houses eight treatment rooms, each one unique and welcoming. Ursula's concept is that all the practitioners will work together to support each other and their clients. As she says, “With Chinese medicine and massage therapy, the things that are more known, and reflexology of course too, by pulling them all together gives each of them much more weight and then we can introduce other complementary therapies to people who are only used to the known things. So, I am hoping to validate some of the other therapies that are also beneficial for people.”

Future plans include building a deck at the back of the building, possibly a gazebo and zen garden. In the fall she is planning a labyrinth out front of the building and she hopes that people will come to walk it. Ursula also purchased the building next door and is excited to start phase 2 of the project which will possibly include a personal training studio, seminar room and perhaps a physiotherapist to round out the services offered.

This has so obviously been a long and exacting journey for Ursula and her colleagues. When asked if she has had any doubts over the past three years, her answer is no, discouragement sometimes, but no loss of faith. For her it has been an altogether beautiful learning experience and she feels that she has been growing as the centre develops from idea to reality. Even though there were issues to work through, she hasn't doubted her vision, she has felt “in her heart” that this will be successful. As she says, “Build it and people will come.”

I am so impressed with what Ursula has accomplished so far and wish her and her colleagues all the best in the days and years to come.

A Life at Work
The Joy of Discovering What You Were Born to Do

Thomas Moore

Thomas Moore is a bestselling author and internationally known lecturer. Everywhere he goes, he finds people who are expressing a growing unhappiness with their work lives. Inevitably, the question being asked is the same: "Why am I doing what I'm doing?" In A Life at Work, Moore walks readers through the difficult and transformative process of discovering their deepest purpose in life. With his now - famous blend of spirituality and psychology, he explores the strong desire all of us have to feel fulfilled and satisfied by our work and careers. Readers will not find charts, questionnaires, or the other trappings of standard self-help books in A Life at Work. Instead, Moore offers a personal and contemplative guide to traversing obstacles, such as inflated egos, despair, and fear, that prevent us from finding purpose in our careers. He also shares the struggles of great thinkers and artists who grappled with their own uncertainty before finally finding their calling. For anyone who feels dissatisfied at work and questions the path they have chosen, this poignant and practical meditation will help them discover the answers.

You have within you unlimited capacities for love, for joy, for communion with life, and for unshakable freedom - and here is how to awaken them. In The Wise Heart, one of the leading spiritual teachers of our time offers the most accessible and illuminating guide to Buddhism's transformational psychology ever published in the West.

Trained as a monk in Thailand, Burma, and India, Jack Kornfield experienced at first hand the life-changing power of Buddhist teachings: the emphasis on the nobility and sacredness of the human spirit, the fine-grained analysis of emotion and thought, the precise techniques for healing, training, and transforming the mind and heart. In contrast to the medical orientation of most Western psychology and psychiatry, here is a vision of radiant human dignity, and a practical path for realizing it in our own lives.

The Wise Heart is the fruit of a life's work that includes such classics as A Path with Heart and After the Ecstasy, the Laundry. Filled with stories from Kornfield's Buddhist psychotherapy practice and portraits of remarkable teachers, it also includes a moving account of his own recovery from a violence-filled childhood. For meditators and mental health professionals, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike, The Wise Heart offers an extraordinary journey from the roots of consciousness to the highest expression of human possibility.

The Last Lecture

Randy Pausch

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." --Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" - wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

This book offers you an opportunity to internalize and directly experience the great wisdom of the Tao Te Ching, a collection of verses authored by the Chinese prophet Lao-tzu.

The words Tao Te Ching translate to 'living and applying the Great Way.' Although just 81 short verses, the Tao encourages you to change your life by literally changing the way you think. By reading through the verses presented here (which Dr. Dyer pieced together after reviewing hundreds of translations) - along with the corresponding affirmation he created for each verse - you'll be embarking on a path that encompasses the profound ideas that Lao-tzu intended to convey.

The Tao Te Ching offers you Divine guidance on virtually every area of human existence. It is a new way of thinking in a world that needs to recapture its ancient teachings. Awe
The Delights and Dangers of our Eleventh Emotion

Paul Pearsall, PhD

The first book to explore the enigmatic emotion of awe, based on the only-known study of its connection to the meaning of life 'Feeling suddenly elevated to the limits of indescribable delight, yet teetering on the edge of fear, we experience our rarest, most powerful, and least understood emotion: awe. It's an overwhelming and life-altering blend of fright and fascination that leaves us in a state of puzzled apprehension and appreciative perplexed wonder. If we go beyond a kind of ignorant distant voyeurism through which we gawk at life rather than fully engage with it and put in the effort to try to understand a little more about life's meaning, awe becomes less a feeling of being high and more a feeling of deep immersion in any and all of life's processes, including health, illness, love, and even death. It may not cause us to come to believe in something, but it can cause us to believe that there is something more beyond the grasp of our limited human consciousness. It can turn our stress into motivation for growth, solidify our commitment to our families as systems that can experience collective awe together, and help us find meaning, comprehensibility, and manageability at times of our most profound losses and even our own death.

An eye-opening, and highly perceptive with unexpected twists and turns as grand as awe itself, Awe is an invitation to leave our states of languishing and to flourish; however, the choice is ultimately yours as to what to do with your eleventh emotion, its delights and dangers, and what you choose to make of it.

Throughout time, we have sought peace and safety by trying to out-guess the unknown. We have tried to prepare for the unexpected and the apparitions of our minds. In an age of 24-hour cable news, when we can stay glued to the latest terrorist attack or natural disaster, the next epidemic, and what the pundits tell us we should be afraid of, our efforts to control the unknown and keep ourselves safe have led to a collective as well as a personal sensation of fear. We have become addicted to fear.

But we don't need to be adrenaline junkies. Fearproof Your Life guides us through a process of how discovering who we truly are immunizes us from our own fears, as well as those of others. Bailey takes us through a process of knowing, listening to, and honoring our own unique True Self, of being willing to listen to our truth and act from it, without seeking approval, of being willing to forgive ourselves and others and take responsibility for what we create.

Moses Code
The Movie (DVD)

James F. Twyman

Thirty-five hundred years ago, God gave Moses a gift that changed the future of humanity. Some of the most incredible miracles in history came from applying a simple code, activating the power of the creative force of God in the world. This ancient technology has largely been lost or ignored since then, only to be revealed once again through this movie (as well as Twyman's book of the same name). This code, if finally applied by humanity, has the power to transform the planet, as well as add the richest blessings to all of us.

Some of the best-known spiritual teachers in the world join James in this film, and offer tools that show us how we can apply the Moses Code to our lives. This is the foundation upon which the Law of Atrraction is built. The film focuses on the power of "Soul Manifestation," drawing upon our own innate spiritual ability to produce miracles everywhere we go. Many other films and books have focused on using the Law of Attration to "get" the things we belive we need - for example, houses, cars or other goods. The Moses Code takes the next much more important step - showing how to use this law to "give" from the soul, automatically attracting spiritual blessings to us!
