May's Insights from Lisa

Happy May Friends!! Spring is here and what a relief! For awhile I think some of us thought we might go from winter straight back into Autumn with no spring or summer after all that snow in April LOL! The birds are happy, the flowers are happy and the cards I pulled for you all are happy too :)

I would like to mention right off the top that there is a lot of yellow in this spread and that is fantastic. Yellow is the colour of joy, happiness, optimism and warmth. It is all about vitality and a positive heart felt life source. It is about growth and newness. Apart from green it is the quintessential colour of spring. The warmth of the sun brings us new growth in nature and also within us. We can't help but feel enthusiastic and energized and oh so happy not to wear a winter coat :)

Yellow is also the colour of our 3rd chakra ,the solar plexus chakra. Our solar plexus chakra sits about 6” above our belly button. This chakra is associated with the element of fire and it says “I Can”. It is the centre of our empowerment, self confidence and personal power. It is where our strength and courage come from. Affirmations for this chakra are I Am Strong: I Am Powerful: I Am Confident. It asks us to use our personal will power to grow, experience and become expansive. From here, we choose healthy relationships and stand in our power. We feel empowered to make choices that are best for us and honour ourselves and our needs. We are confident in our choices and know we deserve love, happiness and success. Sounds great doesn't it??? It is! But, it should also be of no surprise that many women struggle with this chakra, including myself.

The issue with this chakra is that so many of us women are nervous about what our truthsmaking it is hard to stand firm and tall. Being super confident, outgoing and powerful will seem overwhelming and kinda scary to some. We think...”No, no. I just stay small and safe thank you. I prefer to stay under the radar with my Cheetos and my Mountain Dew”. “Life is good when I don't make waves and it's nice and predicable. I'll just hashtag confident and powerful on pictures of funny cats on Instagram”. It can be overwhelming to say “I Got This”. It feels vulnerable but there is growth in that. It is in the vulnerability where we find our truth and our power. The magic happens there because we dare.

I think this reading is asking us to check in with how we feel about saying I Can. How does saying “I am powerful and confident” make you feel?? What comes up? What feelings are evoked immediately after you declare that you can stand in your power? I know for me some days I feel great about being empowered and some days I pretend I don't speak English and have no idea what that sentence means. Our chakras are never static of course and as life evolves so does our ability to process and cope. The key is to be aware and be mindful of the messages we repeat to ourselves and how much we believe the inner critic. Let yellow heal you and encourage you to be more empowered and more true to yourself. Wearing yellow, eating yellow foods and carrying yellow crystals can help balance and smooth out your solar plexus chakra. I have yellow socks for days I need help and I went I look at them I say”Yes I can”. True story AND! I also have red socks to help me stray grounded in my root chakra :)

#1. Joy- This is Dancin' Daisy and she brings joy into the lives of whoever she meets. Her happiness and sheer exuberance is contagious and delightful. Daisy asks us to really bask in the newness of this spring season and what that means for us. Feel the energy of rebirth and renewal. How can you include this feeling into your own day-to-day?? What little changes can you make happen that will bring you joy and a sense of new beginnings?? What have you been wanting to start but have been putting off? Blooms are starting to bud and everything is showing signs of colour. Remember that Joy is asking you to plant the seeds for what you want to start new and give birth to but not to try and make it happen over night. The flowers and the trees will take weeks to open up in full bloom. Seedlings need to time to germinate and push through the soil and reach for the sun. Whatever it is that you would like to start new needs time, care and love too. Imagine a yellow ball of sunshine in the area of your solar plexus chakra. Let it expand and spin evenly and smoothly and feel its vibrant energy of delight and enthusiasm as you think about what you would like to make happen this month. Feel the pleasure of putting your ideas and plans into motion. As I say most months, it's always a good idea to let go of what no longer serves us and to try and the clear clutter from our minds and our closets. Let go of out dated ideas and things that aren't for your greater good :)

#2. Nature- The Nature card offers nourishment, energy, revitalization and most importantly strength. The roots from the plants you planted last year need strength to break through the earth again and reach out for spring. Let that strength help you envision what will be new for you this month. It sounds a bit cliche but let what is growing around us inspire you. We get too busy and rushed and have “no time” to slow down. If you go out to eat your lunch in the sun don't wear your head phones. Quiet your mind from racing and going over AND over things that you should have said or didn't say....focus on the robin listening for worms or the squirrels chasing each other. Live in their world for a moment and forget yours. Be connected with nature in those few moments and when you come back to your reality notice how calm and peaceful you feel. Feel how your own energy has changed. Because honestly, it has. There is a warmth in the heart centre from this short experience that you can come back to later when you need to. Nature heals us on so many levels and spring indeed offers some of the most intense rejuvenation we can get all year long. Soak it all in!

#3. Four of Wands- Celebrate the day! It is time to have some fun and not take life too seriously. Celebrate your latest accomplishments or you getting through something you didn't think you could. Celebrate the fact that you learned something new or that you took a leap of faith and you are proud of yourself for trying. Celebrate your friendships and what wonderful bonds you have with your friends. Celebrate how you support each other and what a good friend you are to them. Give yourself a pat on the back! Sounds a bit corny, I know, but it worth saying that sometimes we need to praise ourselves because it helps us to affirm our value and our sense of self worth. It also shuts up the inner critic and if you acknowledge your value regularly, it is like putting some tape over the mouth of the inner critic and shutting him in the closet...where he belongs. That my friends, is the power of yellow :)

#4. The Tribe- This card is affirming the Four of Wands and asking us to embrace our need to be social creatures and our deep rooted need to belong. We need to make sure we are in loving caring tribes that are healthy for us. We need to be in a tribe where we are valued and seen and we can do the same for others. Maybe you will find yourself attracted to a new tribe of people who will help you birth your ideas and new ventures for the future. Maybe you will meet new people who can point you in the right direction and help you make your dreams come true. Be on the look out for new acquaintances and introductions. Stay open and responsive to serendipitous or chance meetings and connections. The universe is sending new tribe members our way so stay alert for who might be the right match. These new friends will bring positive energy and a renewed sense of belonging. We are all connected and now the universe wants to you enjoy some new connections to help you be the best version of you, you can be.

Wooohoooo! Enjoy May friends and know whether near or far, we are all connected. Love Lisa xo

An Epidemic of Wellness, The Certainty Of Dying, and Killing Ourselves to Live Longer

Barbara Ehrenreich

A razor-sharp polemic which offers an entirely new understanding of our bodies, ourselves, and our place in the universe, Natural Causes describes how we over-prepare and worry way too much about what is inevitable. One by one, Ehrenreich topples the shibboleths that guide our attempts to live a long, healthy life—from the importance of preventive medical screenings to the concepts of wellness and mindfulness, from dietary fads to fitness culture.

But Natural Causes goes deeper—into the fundamental unreliability of our bodies and even our "mind-bodies," to use the fashionable term. Starting with the mysterious and seldom-acknowledged tendency of our own immune cells to promote deadly cancers, Ehrenreich looks into the cellular basis of aging, and shows how little control we actually have over it. We tend to believe we have agency over our bodies, our minds, and even over the manner of our deaths. But the latest science shows that the microscopic subunits of our bodies make their own "decisions," and not always in our favor.

We may buy expensive anti-aging products or cosmetic surgery, get preventive screenings and eat more kale, or throw ourselves into meditation and spirituality. But all these things offer only the illusion of control. How to live well, even joyously, while accepting our mortality—that is the vitally important philosophical challenge of this book.

Drawing on varied sources, from personal experience and sociological trends to pop culture and current scientific literature, Natural Causes examines the ways in which we obsess over death, our bodies, and our health. Both funny and caustic, Ehrenreich then tackles the seemingly unsolvable problem of how we might better prepare ourselves for the end—while still reveling in the lives that remain to us.

These days, it’s often easier to avoid face-to-face contact in favor of technological shortcuts. But as Michael Gelb argues in this compelling, entertaining book, the meaningful relationships that come from real interaction are the key to creating innovative ideas and solving our most intractable problems. In The Art of Connection, Gelb offers readers seven methods of developing this essential rapport in their professional and personal lives. Each chapter covers specific techniques and illustrates them with memorable stories, relevant scientific research, and hands-on exercises that allow readers to apply their new skills. Most important, Gelb reminds us that developing rapport with others is not just a business tool to enhance productivity but a valuable end in itself. He guides us to cultivate the skills we all need to deepen our relationships, broaden our humanity, and transform our lives.

Legends say that before there was time, before there was language, there were the sacred symbols. The Medicine Wheel, the Curse, the Eagle, the Jaguar, and others spoke to us intimately. In their countless manifestations, they offered hope, expressed caution, illuminated opportunity, inspired creation, courted power, and shared knowledge. The sacred symbols belong to the realm of archetypes and the collective unconscious, the spiritual common ground shared by peoples modern and ancient.

Now, three master teachers and healers—Alberto Villoldo, Colette Baron-Reid, and Marcela Lobos—have brought their wisdom and talents together to offer a doorway into the realm of the sacred symbols with the Mystical Shaman Oracle. When you consult the oracle, you summon power and insight that can help you understand the present, heal the past, and influence the course of your future.

We can become our own prophets and visionaries. We can converse directly with Spirit, dialogue with the forces of nature, speak with the great archetypes—the ancient gods—without intermediaries. No one needs to stand between the Creator and you, or between you and the great powers of nature.

This is the classic Lenormand deck for the 21st century, now reissued with a fresh design to showcase the amazing hand-painted card illustrations that guide the diviner in solving problems, learning what the future holds and developing intuition. The traditional deck has been updated to make it as relevant as possible to contemporary readers, including in the LGBT community: the deck offers, for example, an extra Man card and an extra Woman card to allow same-sex relationships to appear in readings. Another extra card, the Divinator, allows the diviner themselves to appear in a spread. Other updates to make the cards feel more relevant today include reducing the original deck's reliance on Christian imagery, for example by changing the name of the Cross card to the Crossing, and replacing its crucifix artwork with a beautiful image of bird wings over a bridge.

Much used by the Roma, the Lenormand cards are named after Marie-Anne Lenormand, a famous clairvoyant of the 18th and 19th centuries who read for Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte. Fascinated by this evocative oracle, cartomancer and Lenormand expert Caitlín Matthews commissioned simple yet profound artwork to capture the authentic flavour of the antique decks. The card illustrations are all hand-painted (rather than created as digital montages), allowing each card to express its own character. The accessible guidebook is suitable for a complete beginner to card divination, but also offers new perspectives to existing Lenormand users. There are detailed profiles of each card, as well as practical advice on using layouts to ask for guidance on a specific problem or to look at the bigger picture and discover true purpose in life.
